Artificial Intelligence, Computer Simulation and Theory Construction in the Social Science∗

The current use of Artificial Intelligence methods as tools for theory construction in sociology is reviewed. The main use seems to be the modelling of cognitive models processes of individual actors. Other approaches to simulation in sociology uses very simple models of individual actors, especially cellular automata. The theoretical importance of this kind of model for sociology is neglectable.
